Drive the length of 17-Mile Drive this week and you will pass two versions of the same neighborhood moving in opposite directions. Near Stillwater Cove, the Lodge is fully open for the first time since its renovation wrapped last fall, its dining rooms complete, its entrance framed by two 140-year-old olive trees that were relocated rather than removed. Further up the same road, the Links at Spanish Bay sits behind construction fencing, its fairways torn up for a redesign that will not finish until spring 2027.
This is not a neighborhood returning to normal after Car Week. It is a neighborhood mid-handoff, where the half that spent nine months under scaffolding just closed its project the same season the other half opened its own.
The Week the Circus Left
The 75th Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance ran on August 16, 2026, drawing 218 cars to the 18th fairway, including 33 international entries from 14 countries. A 1935 Duesenberg SSJ Special Speedster, once owned by Clark Gable, took Best of Show. For residents near Stillwater Cove, the more immediate story was logistical. Coastal access at the Beach and Tennis Club closed entirely from August 13 through 16, with reservation-only parking at the 17th Hedgerow in the days bracketing it, August 10 through 12 and again on August 17. Eleven days later, that access has reopened and the reservation requirements have lifted. The 18th fairway is grass again, not a show field.
This rhythm is not new. What is new is what the neighborhood looks like once the tents come down.
What Car Week 2026 Actually Closed Out
Rewind to Car Week 2025 and the picture was different. The Lodge's renovation had been underway since February of that year, kicked off the day after Rory McIlroy won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. By that August, The Bench had reopened two months earlier with updated interiors overlooking the 18th hole, but the Tap Room and Stillwater were still closed to guests, mid-renovation. The reopening of Stillwater was not one more phase. It was the point at which every piece, including the new 24-person Champions Room lined with USGA memorabilia, was finally back in place at once.
Car Week 2026 was the first Car Week the Lodge has hosted since that sentence was finished. Anyone booking a dinner reservation this August did so in a dining room that has now operated as a complete set for close to ten months, not one still catching up to its own opening date.
The Other Side of the Same Road
Spanish Bay tells the inverse story. The Links at Spanish Bay closed on March 18, 2026, for a 13-month redesign led by architect Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner, with a target reopening in spring 2027, timed to arrive a few months ahead of the U.S. Open's seventh appearance at Pebble Beach Golf Links. The stated goal is to bring the course, which opened in 1987 in a Scottish-links style, up to the standard of its sister courses in Del Monte Forest. The project's scope also includes rebuilding the Spanish Bay boardwalk, the public coastal walkway between the golf course and the beach that had been damaged in recent storms. That boardwalk work began in spring 2025, ahead of the golf course's own closure this past March.
For golfers, the workaround has been straightforward: Del Monte Golf Course and Spyglass Hill Golf Course absorb the displaced rounds. For residents who used the Spanish Bay side of the neighborhood for something other than golf, the disruption has been quieter but longer-running. Construction fencing has ringed that stretch of coastline since March, five months and counting as of this Concours.
One piece of good news landed the day after Car Week ended. The Spanish Bay Club pool, closed for its own separate renovation, carried a posted reopening date of August 17, 2026, with the fitness center that had been temporarily relocated to Spanish Bay Tennis expected to move back once the pool work wraps.

What Actually Changes for the Next Eight Months

A dinner reservation at the Lodge is now a bet on a finished product rather than a work in progress, and locals who held off during the renovation months have a genuine reason to go back. Meanwhile, anyone whose routine ran through the Spanish Bay boardwalk or fairways has already spent five months rerouting, and that rerouting has another seven to eight months to run before spring 2027.
The pool reopening is a small but real signal in the middle of that gap. It tells residents on the Spanish Bay side that not everything on their end of the road is on hold. The golf course is the long project. The pool was the short one, and it just closed its own loop within a day of the Concours wrapping.
None of this is dramatic in the way a grand opening or a closure announcement usually is. It is the kind of shift you only notice if you were paying attention to both ends of 17-Mile Drive at once, which most visitors are not built to do during a single trip. Residents are. The story of this particular August is not that Car Week came and went.
